Daveman will be on vacation until August 1, so blogification may be sporadic or non-existent. Word is that Mozilla will be publishing another update to Firefox, so keep an eye out for it over the next week.

I'll blog you when I get back!

Even if you don't use Internet Explorer and have switched to an alternative browser such as Firefox, Opera or Mozilla, you still need to protect yourself. Each of these browsers has its own vulnerabilities. New versions and security patches are frequently released. Download the latest from your browser's web site: Firefox, Opera, Mozilla.

There are two new library-related wikis: Library Success, created to be a one-stop-shop for great ideas for librarians, and the LISWiki, dealing with libraries and information science. If you're new to wikis, check the Help pages.

Yesterday in the lab a patron was concerned when he went to the Hotmail site because his e-mail address already appeared in the sign-in box. This happened because he accidentally asked Hotmail to "remember" it.

On the sign-in page are three choices:

  1. Save my e-mail address and password
  2. Save my e-mail address
  3. Always ask for my e-mail address and password

The first two choices are there to make it easier to login, but are not good ideas for a public computer. Selecting number 1 would allow someone else to access your account. (This selection would be bad even for your home computer.) Number 2 can inadvertently provide your e-mail address to a stranger. If you don't want the address to appear in the box, select number 3. Hotmail used to have a button labeled "I'm using a public computer" but recently changed the selections.

I've updated the Quick Start guides for burning CDs on Dells 2 and 4. Burning CDs can be confusing so I added some information on the second page about recording options.

Dells 1 and 3 are new and use a different program that I'm not familiar with (yet). I'll write up a guide in the next day or so. In the meantime, patrons who want to burn CDs should use Dell 2 or 4.

Novelist is the featured database on the Database of the Month computer. If you see a message on the screen that reads "Your session timed out", click the Home button on the browser to return to the main Novelist screen. Unfortunately, the sessions time out after a few minutes. We may be able to fix this but for now use this workaround.
